Facing Fire Threats in Densely Populated Areas, Nawakara Shares Tips to Improve Security and Preparedness

Jakarta – The recent fire tragedy in the densely populated area of Manggarai has highlighted the importance of preparedness in facing fire threats. This incident is a stark example of the many fire tragedies in Indonesia, where electrical short circuits are often the primary cause, particularly in densely populated residential areas.

As a security solutions company, Nawakara emphasizes the importance of prevention and preparedness as the first steps in reducing the impact of fires.

Panji Baskoro, Nawakara’s National Operation Support Division Head and a specialist in Emergency Response Team (ERT) products, explained that fires in residential areas are the most common fire threats in Indonesia. Therefore, it is crucial for the public to have practical knowledge and skills to protect themselves and those around them from fire threats.

“One example is preparing two suitcases, one containing important documents and the other clothes. These should be stored in an easily accessible, safe place away from potential fire hazards, and ready to be grabbed quickly in the event of a disaster. This way, people can evacuate efficiently with essential belongings during a fire,” he said during an interview on Monday, September 2, 2024, at Nawakara’s Head Office.

Nawakara encourages the public to be more vigilant by understanding fire safety tips and becoming familiar with early detection technologies that can help prevent larger disasters. Some of the fire prevention steps recommended by Nawakara include:

1. Electrical Installation Maintenance

One of the main causes of residential fires is electrical short circuits. Ensure that the electrical installations in your home are regularly inspected by a professional technician. Old or damaged wires should be replaced immediately, and avoid overloading power sockets or using substandard adapters.

2. Install Fire Prevention Equipment

Having a fire extinguisher (APAR) in every home and business can be a crucial first step in extinguishing small fires before they spread. Placing fire extinguishers in easily accessible locations, such as the kitchen or near exits, and ensuring that all family members know how to use them can enhance safety.

In addition, fire alarms play a vital role in detecting smoke and fire early. Installing alarms in key rooms, such as the kitchen and living room, can provide the necessary warning to evacuate quickly.

As part of its efforts to support safety, Nawakara provides a fire detection system designed to deliver early warnings. This system is equipped with sensors that are sensitive to temperature and smoke changes, which will send an alert signal to the Nawakara Command Center (NCC). Additional features like an SOS Button allow residents to send emergency signals directly to NCC, enabling the ERT team to respond quickly when needed.

3. Charging Mobile Phones Safely

Ensure that mobile phones are charged in a safe place and avoid leaving them unattended, especially while sleeping. Make sure phones are placed on non-flammable surfaces, not on beds, clothes, or near other flammable materials. Charging phones in unsafe places or leaving them plugged in for too long increases the risk of fire.

“We are committed to continuing public education through various training programs. Each of our education programs is specifically designed to address the most relevant risks in each environment, such as fire extinguisher training and evacuation procedures in fire-prone areas. In collaboration with BNPB and Basarnas, we aim to ensure fast and accurate emergency responses to reduce risks and improve safety. Through prevention measures and fire detection technology, we hope to help the public enhance their preparedness for potential fires, protecting themselves and those around them,” he concluded.
