Nawakara Shares Tips to Strengthen Handler and K-9 Synergy in the Field

Jakarta – As part of many security operations worldwide, security K-9 units, often referred to as security dogs, have evolved from mere guards to crucial partners in drug detection, search and rescue, and anti-terrorism operations. The tasks of K-9 units depend on their intended use. For example, the K-9 Detachment owned by the Indonesian National Police (Polri) is tasked with detecting hazardous materials such as explosives or locating victims in search and rescue operations. In the security sector, K-9 units use various types of dogs for their proficiency.

Through certified trainers and handlers, it is crucial to conduct K-9 training according to national and international standards. As a Security Service Provider (BUJP) offering integrated security solutions, Nawakara emphasizes the importance of handler and K-9 synergy in the field to achieve optimal results.

Deputy CEO & Transformation of Nawakara, Satria Djaya Najamuddin, explained that K-9 units are highly effective deterrents due to their visibility. Well-trained dogs and certified handlers can add significant value to facility patrols and security detection. Nawakara’s K-9 team possesses comprehensive knowledge and experience in various tasks such as building security, port security, airport security, event security, as well as narcotics detection and bomb threats.

“In the use of K-9 units, several challenges and controversies need attention. One of these is the ethical issue regarding handlers’ use of the dogs. Some harsher training methods have raised concerns about the welfare of the dogs. Therefore, certification and training are crucial to avoid unwanted issues, especially regarding the comfort between public areas and K-9 dogs,” he said.

Choosing the right type of dog for a specific task is key to the success of a Security K-9 program. Each breed has unique characteristics that make them suitable for various tasks. For example, German Shepherds are often considered the ‘workhorses’ of the Security K-9 world, while Belgian Malinois are known for their speed and agility. Labrador Retrievers are often chosen for tasks that require a calmer and more patient demeanor, such as detection work at airports or other public places.

To foster synergy between handlers and K-9 dogs, here are some key points handlers should consider:

Allow K-9s Space to Adapt Properly

In training K-9 dogs, there are stages to go through, including health checks, temperament assessments, and thorough scent training. Additionally, these dogs undergo rigorous training to sharpen their precision to successfully complete their tasks. Besides skill enhancement training, the dogs are also trained to find firearms, small objects, and missing persons.

Show Affection

To build a strong bond and trust, handlers need to give attention to their K-9 dogs. K-9s are daily trained in agility, search, attack, climbing, and obedience. It is crucial for handlers to show care and provide regular health check-ups and nutritious food to ensure optimal performance.

Regularly Address Handler and K-9 Needs

Since K-9s are essential for tasks such as sniffing out hidden objects and criminals, which can be energy-draining, it is also vital to ensure the dogs have adequate rest periods to maintain their focus on their tasks.

By adhering to these practices, handlers can ensure that K-9 units perform their duties effectively and maintain a high standard of security operations.
